Ataxia is a clinical term used to describe a loss of coordination. Think of it as the "check engine light" for the brain’s coordination center, the cerebellum.

When the cerebellum isn't functioning properly, it disrupts the signals sent to the rest of the body. This pattern of symptoms can affect many parts of daily life, including:

  • Balance & Walking: A feeling of unsteadiness or "drunkenness" when moving.
  • Fine Motor Skills: Difficulty with hand tasks like dressing or eating, as well as slurred speech or involuntary eye movements.

Because ataxia can be caused by many different things, ranging from sudden injuries to long-term genetic conditions, the first step is working to identify your specific cause.

While every journey is different, treatment usually involves a combination of medication and specialized therapies to manage symptoms, enhance coordination, and improve your overall quality of life.

No. Many patients come to us in the "diagnostic gray area"—either experiencing unexplained coordination issues or having been told they have "ataxia" without a clear explanation of the cause. Scheduling an intake is the first step toward clarity. We will help verify your insurance and answer any questions before coordinating an introductory call with your virtual care team.

Yes. We provide a  diagnosis by reviewing your medical and family history, symptoms, and prior workups. For many patients, the key to finding a specific answer lies in genetic testing, which can confirm the exact type of hereditary ataxia and help your family understand their own risks.

It depends on your specific history, but common steps include a detailed neurologic history and exam, a review of prior imaging (like an MRI), targeted lab work, and nerve and muscle testing (EMG/NCS). Because many ataxias are hereditary, genetic testing is frequently a central part of the evaluation to provide a clear and conclusive diagnosis.

No. If you have prior records, we will review them thoroughly so you don’t repeat tests unnecessarily. If anything is missing, we’ll explain why it matters and coordinate local referrals for you.

A significant portion of an ataxia evaluation involves a careful clinical history and guided movement tasks performed over video. If a specific part of the evaluation requires an in-person study, we will tell you exactly what is needed and help coordinate it locally. Virtual care is a faster way to get organized, supported, and moving forward.

No. We work in collaboration with your existing care team. We act as a specialized layer of support to help diagnose and create a highly specific care plan that you can implement alongside your local doctors.

Caregiver, ALS

Synapticure and support with speech therapy has been a true blessing in helping to care for my wife with Alzheimer's disease. Today Kylee was able to bring out her thoughts as she changes.

Caregiver, Alzheimer's

What could have been traumatic was actually very pleasant. Raven brought out the best in him—he was totally at ease and actually proud of himself after the session. You wiped away any fear or doubt and proved that Synapticure is the real deal.

Caregiver, Frontotemporal Dementia

Our PCP was so impressed with the thoroughness of the notes from Synapticure. He was very excited about the new treatment options you recommended, which were new to him. For the first time, I don't feel like we're fighting the system alone.

Caregiver, Lewy Body Dementia

The willingness of my neurologist to prescribe off label has given me new hope in my fight with ALS. It allows me to try something new while waiting for a clinical trial. For anyone fighting ALS , time is of the essence and the speed that Synapticure is something other providers should strive for. Thank you for giving me hope!

Patient, ALS

Thank you for the access to genetic testing! It was discovered that I had a mutation of the SOD1 gene which has completely changed my treatment.

Patient, ALS

Thank you so much for creating this wonderful healthcare system. You are life savers in a world where we need all the help we can get. The care I've received from this dedicated team of professionals goes beyond any other healthcare available nationwide. Life with Parkinson's sucks but Synapticure helps guide their patients on how to live their best lives with chronic illnesses.

Patient, Parkinson's

Synapticure has been an order of magnitude improvement in my care and scope of care (neurology plus behavioral health). Discussions are always open (both directions) and thorough. In between scheduled appointments, my care team is very responsive to questions and needs.

Patient, Parkinson's

The support my wife and I have received from Synapticure since my PLS diagnosis in 2024 has been nothing short of exceptional. The fact that their high-quality, compassionate care is delivered entirely via telehealth has made access incredibly convenient for us. Their knowledgeable team provides much-needed clarity and peace of mind from the comfort of home. Truly a five-star organization.
