Synapticure’s Behavioral Health Program FAQ

What is behavioral health?

Behavioral health encompasses both your mental and physical health and addresses the interaction between the two. Mental health, on the other hand, specifically focuses on one’s emotional well-being or mental state. Behavioral health care uses strategies specifically designed to help one cope with stress and trauma, like those often associated with fatal or chronic medical conditions.

Why is behavioral health important?

Psychological stress and trauma accompanies a diagnosis of a neurodegenerative disease and is part of your disease fight. Going through this journey not only affects one’s physical health, but also their mental health and well-being, not only for the one living with the disease, but also their entire family. Many patients have told us that psychological support and ways to deal with the trauma were not offered as part of their care, and they had to figure out solutions on their own. We aim to change that. We believe health care should include support for one’s physical well-being, as well as their mental well-being, with the goal of improving the quality of life of everyone affected by the disease.

How does Synapticure’s Behavioral Health Program work?

The behavioral health program at Synapticure was built to be  an additional, personalized layer of support for our patients. The program enables every patient to have their mental and emotional well being assessed and monitored on a regular basis so that care can be proactive and in place as soon as it is needed.

As part of your regular Synapticure care, typically you will meet with your Behavioral Health Care Manager [BHCM] every month. As part of these meetings, they will perform screenings for depression and anxiety and review mental health intervention options. In between visits, your BHCM will collaborate with your interdisciplinary team, review your medications with a Synapticure Psychiatrist, and finalize your care plan. Possible actions may include adding new medications or adjusting what you are on, talk therapy, or other non-invasive treatments.

As mentioned above, follow up visits with your BHCM will typically be once a month, but they may be more frequent depending on your needs. Your team will be available to talk with you via phone, video conference, or on our Patient Portal during business hours.

In addition to your BHCM, we have in-house psychology support available to all Synapticure patients for individual, family, and/or group therapy depending on the level of care needed. Our team can also facilitate external referrals if indicated.

What are the benefits of using Synapticure for behavioral health services?

In addition to the team described above, our visits are all virtual, completed from the comfort of your home. This means that you can spend less time driving and avoid the stress that comes with traveling with a neurodegenerative disease. Finally, our Behavioral Health Care Team collaborates both internally and externally, so that you never have to repeat yourself or worry about care plan changes falling through the cracks.
